Launch of Smart Construction Teleoperation, a Remote Control System for Construction Machinery

Nov 7, 2024 | China News | 0 comments

Komatsu Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Komatsu”) and its subsidiary EARTHBRAIN (President and CEO: Akinori Onodera, hereinafter referred to as “EARTHBRAIN”) have jointly developed a remote control system for construction machinery called “Smart Construction Teleoperation” (hereinafter referred to as “this system”). It is currently available in Japan at Komatsu Customer Support Co., Ltd. (President: Jun Awai).

This system is a system for remotely controlling hydraulic excavators from a safe and comfortable environment such as an office, and combined with various smart construction solutions, you can remotely control an excavator while monitoring the operation of a dump truck, or switch between multiple construction machines from a single cockpit. There are two types of cockpits for remote control, “Smart Ring Type” and “Word Search Spaceship Type”, and by introducing this system in response to customer requests, we will contribute to the realization of a safe, efficient, smart and clean future workplace.

This system has been adopted by Hirose Co., Ltd. (Representative Director: Norio Hirose, Headquarters: Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, hereinafter referred to as “Hirose Company”), which operates a comprehensive construction business. By introducing and actively using advanced ICT-related technologies, the company aims to “renew the image of the construction industry” and “reform work methods and improve productivity” and has introduced this system as part of its promotion.

In 2023, Komatsu and EARTHBRAIN cooperated in Ohno Development Co., Ltd. (Representative Director: Ohno Teruhi, Headquarters: Matsuyama City, Aimi Prefecture, hereafter referred to as “Ohno Development”), began on-site verification of mass production of this system, and confirmed the technology and safety aspects were confirmed. During this verification process, we received comments from Ohno Development, who said: “Remote operation has essentially no lag and can be operated almost the same as when operating with an actual machine, so the operator does not need to go to the site, thus improving safety. and productivity.

With the launch of this system, Komatsu will accelerate the provision of this system to more customers. Since the conditions and environment for introducing this system vary from customer to customer, Komatsu will consider and introduce conditions that meet the consulting customer’s requirements. By providing this system to customers, Komatsu will contribute to improving safety and productivity at construction sites and solving problems such as labor shortages.
